Inspirational Quotes by Julia Abigail Fletcher Carney (American Poet)

Julia Abigail Fletcher Carney (1823–1908) was an American educator, poet, author, and editor, best known for her poem Little Things, widely featured in school textbooks and church hymnals. Writing under pen names like “Julia” and “Rev. Peter Benson’s Daughter,” she contributed poetry and essays to The Boston Trumpet, Christian Freeman, Rose of Sharon, and Lily of the Valley.

Born in Lancaster, Massachusetts, Carney displayed an early talent for poetry, composing verses before she could write them down. After surviving scarlet fever at eight, she attended Lancaster Academy and later taught in Boston’s primary schools. In 1845, she wrote Little Things, emphasizing the impact of small acts of kindness.

Her published works include Gifts from Julia (1850s,) a collection of prose and verse, and Poetry of the Seasons (1860s,) both widely circulated. She also wrote Sunday school question books promoting religious education. In 1849, she married Universalist minister Thomas J. Carney and had eight children while continuing her literary career.
