Juan María Montalvo Fiallos (1832–89,) an Ecuadorian essayist, novelist, and diplomat, is widely recognized as one of the preeminent writers of Spanish American prose in the 19th century. Renowned for his incisive critique of Ecuadorian society and his influential political commentary, Montalvo played a pivotal role in shaping intellectual discourse during his era.
Born in Ambato, Ecuador, Montalvo’s literary career soared with the release of Las Catilinarias (1880,) a collection of essays addressing political corruption, social challenges, and the cultural landscape of Ecuador. Drawing inspiration from the Roman orator Cicero, this work boldly scrutinized the ruling elite while advocating for essential political and social reforms.
Another noteworthy addition to Montalvo’s body of work is Capítulos que se le Olvidaron a Cervantes (1895,) a posthumously published piece that continued his satirical examination of Ecuadorian society and politics.
Today, Montalvo is hailed as one of the most exceptional polemicists in Hispanic literature, earning widespread admiration across Latin America for his fearless denunciation of dictatorship. His writings, often sparking controversy, ultimately led to his exile from Ecuador. Consequently, Montalvo spent a significant portion of his life in various Latin American countries and Europe, engaging in diplomatic roles.
