Inspirational Quotes by Josephine Pollard (American Children’s Poet)

Josephine Pollard (1834–92) was an American hymn writer, poet, and children’s author, known for her Christian hymns and historical children’s books focused on religious themes, American history, and moral storytelling.

Born in New York City, Pollard attended the Spingler Institute, an exclusive girls’ school. A lifelong Presbyterian, she co-founded Sorosis, a professional women’s club. She worked as an editor for Sunday School Times and Methodist Book Concern, editing a magazine for African American readers.

She published over 100 hymns, including Beyond the Sunset’s Radiant Glow and I Stood Outside the Gate. Her poetry appeared in Harper’s Magazine, Scribner’s Magazine, and The New York Ledger. Some of her children’s poetry was collected in Elfin Land (1882.)

Her notable children’s books include Christopher Columbus and the Discovery of the New World in Words of One Syllable (1892,) Bible Stories for Children (1899,) History of the Old Testament in Words of One Syllable (1899,) and The Life of Washington (1884.) She also wrote The History of the United States Told in One Syllable Words (1884.)
