Joseph Ward Simmons (b.1964) is an American musician, producer, and media personality, best known as Rev Run or DJ Run, a founding member of the iconic hip-hop group Run-D.M.C. He is a key figure in shaping the landscape of modern rap music.
Born in Hollis, Queens, New York, Simmons grew up in a neighborhood pivotal to the early development of hip-hop culture. He attended Andrew Jackson High School, where he met Darryl McDaniels and Jason Mizell, with whom he would form Run-D.M.C. The group rose to prominence in the 1980s, pioneering a new sound that blended rap with rock and introduced the genre to a broader audience. Their groundbreaking self-titled début album Run-D.M.C. (1984) featured the hit single “Rock Box”, and their follow-up King of Rock (1985) cemented their status as rap innovators. Their 1986 album Raising Hell, which included “Walk This Way” (featuring Aerosmith,) became one of the most influential hip-hop albums of all time.
Simmons’ role as the charismatic frontman, along with his contributions to songwriting and production, helped make Run-D.M.C. one of the most iconic rap groups in history. His influence extended into television, where he starred in the reality series Run’s House (2005–09) on MTV, showcasing his life as a father and his devotion to family and faith.
