Inspirational Quotes by Joseph Parrish Thompson (American Clergyman)

Joseph Parrish Thompson (1819–79) was an American abolitionist, Congregationalist minister, and writer, known for his advocacy of social justice and theological scholarship. He played a key role in anti-slavery movements and religious discourse.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Thompson graduated from Yale University (1838) and studied theology at Andover Theological Seminary. Ordained in New Haven (1840,) he became pastor of Broadway Tabernacle Church in New York (1845–71,) preaching abolitionist and progressive ideals.

He co-founded The Independent (1848,) an anti-slavery religious weekly, and contributed to The New Englander, later The Yale Review. Notable works include Memoir of Rev. David Tappan Stoddard (1858,) Egypt, Past and Present (1863,) The United States as a Nation (1870,) and The Theology of Christ (1873,) exploring religion, history, and social reform.

Thompson helped establish Congregational churches in Manhattan and Brooklyn, served as president of the American Union Commission, and contributed to the Treaty of Berlin’s religious liberty clause.
