John William Snow (b.1939) is an American businessman and government official who served as the 73rd United States Secretary of the Treasury under President George W. Bush 2003–06.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Snow obtained a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Toledo (1962,) a PhD in economics from the University of Virginia (1965,) and a Juris Doctor at the George Washington University Law School (1967.) He worked at the law firm of Wheeler & Wheeler in Washington, D. C., 1967–72. Subsequently, he held various positions within the Nixon and Ford Administrations.
Snow served as an executive at CSX Corporation 1977–2003, where he played a pivotal role in the successful revitalization and turnaround of the company. He also assumed leadership positions in renowned organizations such as the Business Roundtable and the National Council on Economic Education.
As Treasury Secretary, Snow played a crucial role in shaping economic policies and overseeing the nation’s finances. He advocated for tax cuts and implemented initiatives to stimulate economic growth. Additionally, Snow actively addressed international economic matters, including trade policies and currency exchange rates. Following his tenure, Snow returned to the private sector and held positions in various companies and advisory boards.
