John Charles Polanyi (b.1929) is a German-born Canadian chemist known for his contributions to chemical reaction dynamics. He won the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on infrared chemiluminescence, revealing chemical reaction mechanisms.
Born in Berlin, Germany, Polanyi’s family moved to England in 1933. He later studied at Manchester University, earning a PhD (1952.) After postdoctoral research at the National Research Council of Canada and Princeton University, he joined the University of Toronto (1956,) where he remains Professor Emeritus.
Polanyi’s research explores reaction dynamics, particularly chemical bond exchange and energy disposal in molecular interactions, influencing fields like laser chemistry and nanotechnology.
His publications include Chemical Kinetics and Reaction Dynamics (1992,) on reaction mechanisms, and Concepts in Reaction Dynamics (1970,) a film-based educational resource.
