John Forbes Kerry (b.1943) is an American politician and diplomat known for his significant contributions to U.S. foreign policy and his long tenure as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Kerry graduated from Yale University in 1966 with a degree in political science and served as a U.S. Navy officer during the Vietnam War, an experience that influenced his political path. He gained national attention as a critic of the war and co-founded the Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Elected to the Senate in 1982, he served for nearly 30 years, focusing on foreign relations, environmental policy, and healthcare. He was the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in 2004 but lost narrowly to President George W. Bush.

In 2013, President Barack Obama appointed Kerry as Secretary of State, where he played a pivotal role in negotiating the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and advancing U.S. climate diplomacy through the Paris Agreement. He has written several books, including The New War (1997,) This Moment on Earth (2007,) co-authored with his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, and Every Day Is Extra (2018,) a memoir detailing his life and career.
