Johan Huizinga (1872–1945) was a Dutch historian, cultural theorist, and professor, considered a founder of modern cultural history. His work explored medieval and Renaissance societies, emphasizing art, play, and symbolism in historical development.

Born in Groningen, Netherlands, Huizinga first studied Indo-European languages, earning his PhD (1897) with a dissertation on Indian drama. His focus shifted to medieval and Renaissance history, leading to professorships at Groningen University (1905–23) and Leiden University (1915–42.)

His most influential work, Herfsttij der Middeleeuwen (1919, The Autumn of the Middle Ages,) examines medieval Europe’s cultural decline with an aesthetic approach. Homo Ludens (1938, Homo Ludens: A Study of the Play Element in Culture) explores play’s role in civilization. His biography Erasmus (1924, Erasmus and the Age of Reformation) highlights the Renaissance scholar’s intellectual contributions.

Criticizing totalitarianism, he wrote In de schaduwen van morgen (1935, In the Shadow of Tomorrow,) condemning modern society’s mechanization. His later works, including Nederland’s beschaving in de zeventiende eeuw (1941, Dutch Civilization in the Seventeenth Century,) reflect his commitment to cultural preservation.
