Jim Ryun (b.1947,) fully James Ronald Ryun, is an American former middle-distance runner, politician, and Olympic athlete, widely regarded as one of the greatest runners in U.S. history. His achievements on the track and contributions to the sport have solidified his status as an enduring icon in athletics.
Born in Wichita, Kansas, Ryun developed an early passion for running, competing in high school track events where he showcased extraordinary talent. He attended the University of Kansas, training under renowned coach Bob Timmons and setting numerous national and world records. His remarkable career took shape as he consistently shattered records, becoming a standout figure in collegiate and amateur athletics.
His greatest achievement came when he represented the United States in the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games. In 1968, at just 21 years old, he earned a silver medal in the 1500 meters at the Mexico City Olympics, marking a significant milestone in his career. He held the world record for the mile (3:51.3, 1966) and became the first high school athlete to break the four-minute barrier in the mile. His accomplishments set new benchmarks for future generations of middle-distance runners.
Beyond his athletic career, Ryun served as a U.S. congressman for Kansas 1996–2007, focusing on issues such as education and defense.
