Jerry Alan West (1938–2024) was an American basketball player and executive, regarded as one of the greatest figures in NBA history. His silhouette became the iconic NBA logo, symbolizing his lasting impact.

Born in Chelyan, West Virginia, West played at West Virginia University, leading his team to the 1959 NCAA championship game. Drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers (1960,) he spent his entire career there (1960–74.) Known as “Mr. Clutch,” he was a 14-time NBA All-Star, NBA champion (1972,) and NBA Finals MVP (1969)—the only player to win the award on a losing team.

After retiring, he coached (1976–79) before becoming a legendary NBA executive, building championship teams for the Lakers, Golden State Warriors, and Los Angeles Clippers.
