Inspirational Quotes by Jean Lobstein (German-French Surgeon)

Jean Georges Chrétien Frédéric Martin Lobstein (1777–1835) was a German-born French pathologist and surgeon known for his contributions to pathological anatomy and for coining “osteoporosis.”

Born in Giessen, Germany, Lobstein studied medicine at the University of Strasbourg, earning his doctorate (1803.) He worked as an anatomical prosector and later became a professor at the École d’Obstétrique du Rhin Inférieur, where he taught for 30 years.

In 1813, he founded a pathological museum in Strasbourg, which remained intact until the Franco-Prussian War. Appointed professor of pathological anatomy (1819,) he marked a milestone in medical education.

His notable work, Traité d’anatomie pathologique (1829, Treatise on Pathological Anatomy,) was an unfinished four-volume study. In its second volume, he introduced “arteriosclerosis,” still widely used today. Other works include Discours sur la prééminence du système nerveux (1821, Discourse on the Preeminence of the Nervous System,) De nervi sympathetici humani fabrica usu et morbis (1823, On the Structure, Function, and Diseases of the Human Sympathetic Nerve,) and A Treatise on the Structure, Functions, and Diseases of the Human Sympathetic Nerve (1831.)
