Inspirational Quotes by James Pike (American Episcopal Clergyman)

James A. Pike (1913–69) was an American Episcopal bishop, lawyer, and writer known for his progressive views on theology, civil rights, and social justice. His outspoken nature made him one of the era’s most controversial religious figures.

Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, he initially pursued law, earning a J.S.D. from Yale Law School (1938) and working as a staff attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission. He later transitioned to theology, serving as Dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (1952–58) and Bishop of California (1958–66.)

An early advocate for racial desegregation, women’s ordination, and ecumenical dialogue, Pike’s theological views—questioning the Trinity and Virgin Birth—led to accusations of heresy. His books include A Time for Christian Candor (1964,) If You Marry Outside Your Faith (1967,) and The Other Side (1968,) which explores psychic phenomena and spiritualism following his son’s death.
