James Patterson (b.1947,) fully James Brendan Patterson Jr., is an American author best known for his thriller, mystery, and young adult fiction. His prolific career has made him one of the best-selling authors of all time, with over 425 million books sold worldwide.

Born in Newburgh, New York, he earned a B.A. in English from Manhattan College and an M.A. from Vanderbilt University. Initially in advertising, he became CEO of J. Walter Thompson North America before transitioning to full-time writing.

His début novel, The Thomas Berryman Number (1976,) won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. He gained recognition with the Alex Cross series, including Along Came a Spider (1993,) Kiss the Girls (1995,) Cross (2006,) and Deadly Cross (2020.) Other popular series include Women’s Murder Club (2001–present,) Maximum Ride (2005–20,) Michael Bennett (2007–present,) and Middle School (2011–present.)

Patterson co-authored books with Bill Clinton (The President Is Missing, 2018) and Dolly Parton (Run, Rose, Run, 2022.) His memoir, James Patterson by James Patterson: The Stories of My Life (2022,) offers insights into his writing journey.
