James Edward Smith (b.1939) is an American biblical scholar known for his contributions to Christian theology and biblical studies.
Born in Huntington, West Virginia, he was raised in a religious household, with his father as a preacher. He studied at Cincinnati Bible Seminary, earning a B.A., B.Th., and Master of Divinity. Later, he obtained a PhD from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
Smith spent 17 years in ministry before transitioning to academia. He taught at Cincinnati Bible College and Seminary (1963–76) and later served as Academic Dean at Florida Christian College (1976–89.)
His published works include Old Testament Survey (1999,) The Promised Messiah (2000,) What the Bible Says About the Heart of Man (2000,) and New Testament Survey (2004.)
