James Baker (b.1930,) fully James Addison Baker III, is an American attorney, diplomat, and political figure known for his influential roles in U.S. government and foreign policy. Serving under three U.S. presidents, he shaped economic and diplomatic strategies during the Cold War and its aftermath.

Born in Houston, Texas, Baker graduated from Princeton University (1952) and earned a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law (1957.) Initially practicing law, he later transitioned into politics, managing presidential campaigns and holding key government positions.

His high-profile roles included White House Chief of Staff (1981–85) under Ronald Reagan, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1985–88,) and U.S. Secretary of State (1989–92) under George H.W. Bush. He played a crucial role in German reunification, Middle East policy, and economic reforms.
