James Arthur Ray (1957–2025) was an American self-help businessman, motivational speaker, and author known for his teachings on personal development, wealth creation, and spirituality. His career saw success but was marred by controversy following his conviction for negligent homicide (2011.)
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, he grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where his father was a preacher. He started at AT&T before transitioning to motivational speaking and self-help coaching. He gained prominence through seminars, books, and media appearances, including CNN’s Larry King Live and The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Ray authored several books, including Harmonic Wealth: The Secret of Attracting the Life You Want (2008) on financial and personal success, The Science of Success (2009) on goal-setting, and Practical Spirituality: How to Use Spiritual Power to Create Tangible Results (2010,) blending New Thought principles with business strategies.
In 2009, three participants died during a sweat lodge ceremony at his retreat, leading to his arrest and conviction (2011.) He served two years in prison before relaunching his self-help business.
