Jacqueline Winspear (b.1955) is a British-American author best known for her Maisie Dobbs historical mystery series, which examines post–World War I society through a private investigator. Her works blend historical fiction, mystery, and psychological depth, earning multiple literary awards.
Born in Kent, England, Winspear studied at the University of London’s Institute of Education before working in academic publishing, marketing, and communications. She emigrated to the U.S. (1990) to pursue writing.
Her début novel, Maisie Dobbs (2003,) introduced the intuitive detective navigating post-war England. The series includes Birds of a Feather (2004,) Messenger of Truth (2006,) and A Sunlit Weapon (2022,) among others.
Winspear also wrote standalone novels, including The Care and Management of Lies (2014,) a World War I-era story, and The White Lady (2023,) exploring espionage and resilience. Her memoir, This Time Next Year We’ll Be Laughing (2020,) reflects on her family’s wartime experiences.
