J. Reuben Clark (1871–1961,) fully Joshua Reuben Clark Jr., was an American attorney, diplomat, and religious leader, known for his legal expertise, government service, and leadership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church.) His influence shaped U.S. foreign policy and church administration.

Born in Grantsville, Utah Territory, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah, serving as valedictorian and student-body president. He later obtained a law degree from Columbia University, becoming a prominent attorney.

Clark was Under Secretary of State (1928–29) under President Calvin Coolidge, focusing on international law and diplomacy. In 1930, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, strengthening U.S.-Mexico relations.

In 1933, he became Second Counselor in the LDS Church’s First Presidency, later serving as First Counselor (1934–61) under three church presidents, modernizing church governance.

Notable works include Memorandum on the Monroe Doctrine (1928) on U.S. foreign policy and As Ye Sow (1955) on religious principles. His speeches and writings on law, diplomacy, and faith remain influential.
