Inspirational Quotes by J. Christopher Herold (German Editor)

Jean Christopher Herold (1919–64) was a Czech-American historian, editor, and author, best known for his biographies and works on Napoleon Bonaparte, Madame de Staël, and French history. His writings combined scholarly research with engaging narrative, earning widespread recognition.

Born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, Herold studied literature at the University of Geneva before moving to New York (1939,) earning a B.S. and M.A. from Columbia University. He edited at Columbia University Press (1946–56) and Stanford University Press (1956–60,) contributing to European history scholarship.

His notable publications include The Age of Napoleon (1963,) a study of Napoleon’s impact on Europe, Mistress to an Age: A Life of Madame de Staël (1958,) winner of the National Book Award for Nonfiction (1959,) and Bonaparte in Egypt (1962,) exploring Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. Other works include Love in Five Temperaments (1961,) a study of historical figures, and Joan, Maid of France (1952,) a children’s biography of Joan of Arc.
