After working for the U.S. War Department’s Censorship Bureau, she transitioned into publishing, serving as J. B. Lippincott & Co.’s publicity director, where she promoted To Kill a Mockingbird.

Her five-decade literary career produced over 50 books. Early works include Cecily (1967) and Amanda’s Choice (1970,) followed by The Man Without a Face (1972,) later adapted into a film. She continued young adult fiction with Dinah and the Green Fat Kingdom (1978) and Kevin’s Hat (1984,) often addressing abuse and identity. Her adult novels, including Kilgaren (1974,) Trelawny (1974,) and Moncrieff (1975,) blended romance and suspense. Bump in the Night (1991) and The Man Without a Face (1993) were adapted into films.
