Herbert Schofield (1882–1963) was a British educator and engineer known for his contributions to technical education and leadership at Loughborough College, later Loughborough University. His work helped shape modern UK vocational training.
Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, Schofield trained as an engineer, completing a seven-year apprenticeship in his father’s textile business. He earned a Carnegie engineering scholarship to the Royal College of Science, London, graduating with First-Class Honours in Applied Mechanical Engineering (1908.) His early research on thermal efficiency in high-speed internal combustion engines earned him a PhD (1923.)
Appointed Principal of Loughborough College (1915–50,) he oversaw significant expansion, training thousands of munitions workers during World War I and pioneering technical libraries for engineering students. His advocacy for practical education influenced national vocational training policies.
