Inspirational Quotes by Henry L. Stimson (American Statesman)

Henry Lewis Stimson (1867–1950) was an American statesman and public servant, best known for his roles as Secretary of War under Presidents William Howard Taft, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman. He held significant influence in both military and diplomatic affairs during some of the most critical moments in U.S. history.

Born in New York City Stimson attended Phillips Academy in Andover and graduated from Yale University (1888) and Harvard Law School (1893.) After practicing law, he entered public service, beginning with his appointment as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in 1906.

Stimson’s influence in U.S. politics grew over the years, particularly during his tenure as Secretary of War. Under President Taft, he was instrumental in modernizing the U.S. Army. During World War I, he served as the civilian administrator overseeing the war effort and played a key role in managing U.S. military logistics. In World War II, as Secretary of War under Roosevelt and Truman, he was deeply involved in decisions regarding military strategy, including the development and use of the atomic bomb. He also served as a key advisor in the post-war period, shaping U.S. foreign policy during the early years of the Cold War.

His memoir, On Active Service in Peace and War (1947,) provides insight into his experiences and contributions.
