Heloise Bowles Cruse (1919–77) was an American newspaper columnist and author, best known for the syndicated column Hints from Heloise, which made her a household name. After her passing, her daughter, Ponce Kiah Marchelle Heloise Cruse, continued the column’s legacy.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Cruse married Marshal Holman Cruse, a U.S. Air Force officer, in 1946. In 1959, she convinced the Honolulu Advertiser to publish her column, originally titled Readers’ Exchange. By 1961, King Features Syndicate renamed it Hints from Heloise, making it one of the most widely syndicated columns, appearing in nearly 600 newspapers.
Cruse authored several bestselling books, including Heloise’s Housekeeping Hints (1962,) Heloise’s Kitchen Hints (1963,) Heloise All Around the House (1965,) Hints for Working Women (1966,) and Heloise’s Work and Money Savers (1967.) Her books sold millions of copies, with Heloise’s Housekeeping Hints ranking among the top 10 bestsellers of 1963.
