Harvey Claflin Mansfield (b.1932) is an American political philosopher known for his conservative interpretations of political theory and scholarship on Machiavelli, Tocqueville, and executive power. He was a professor of government at Harvard University (1962–2023) and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution.
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Mansfield earned a B.A. (1953) and PhD (1961) from Harvard. He briefly taught at the University of California-Berkeley, before returning to Harvard, where he became one of its longest-serving faculty members.
Notable works include Machiavelli’s Virtue (1996) on Machiavelli’s philosophy, Manliness (2006) on gender and leadership, and A Student’s Guide to Political Philosophy (2001) on key thinkers like Plato, Aristotle, and Locke. He also co-translated Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America (2000) with Delba Winthrop.
