Inspirational Quotes by Han Suyin (Chinese-Born Physician, Writer)

Han Suyin (1916–2012,) born Rosalie Matilda Kuanghu Chou, was a Chinese-born Eurasian physician and author known for her writings on modern China, autobiographical memoirs, and fiction. She was a vocal supporter of the Chinese Communist Revolution.

Born in Xinyang, Henan, to a Belgian-educated Chinese engineer and a Belgian mother, she faced discrimination as a Eurasian while attending Yenching University. In 1935, she moved to Brussels to study medicine, later returning to China in 1938 to marry Tang Pao-Huang, a Chinese Nationalist officer. She worked as a midwife in Chengdu before relocating to London in 1944 to continue her medical studies. Her husband died in 1947 during the Chinese Civil War. After graduating with honors in 1948, she practiced medicine in Hong Kong, where her relationship with Australian war correspondent Ian Morrison inspired her bestselling novel A Many-Splendoured Thing (1952,) later adapted into a film.

Her literary career focused on bridging Eastern and Western perspectives. She chronicled her family’s history and China’s political transformation in The Crippled Tree (1965) and Birdless Summer (1968,) while The Morning Deluge (1972) examined Mao Zedong’s rise to power, reflecting her admiration for China’s evolution.
