Gloria María Milagrosa Estefan (b.1957,) née Fajardo García, is a Cuban-American singer, songwriter, and actress renowned for her influential role in Latin music and pop. She was the most popular Latin American singer of the 1980s and 1990s.
Born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Miami, Florida, Estefan gained fame as the lead singer of Miami Sound Machine, a band she formed with her husband, Emilio Estefan.
Estefan’s breakthrough came with the release of Conga (1985,) which became a global hit and established her as a major figure in Latin pop. Her albums Let It Loose (1987) and Into the Light (1988) further solidified her success, featuring hits like 1-2-3 and Anything for You. In 1991, she released Into the Light, which included the powerful ballad Coming Out of the Dark, inspired by her recovery from a severe bus accident.
Estefan has won numerous awards, including multiple Grammy Awards, and is known for her philanthropic efforts and advocacy for Latino culture. Her memoir is The Rhythm of Success: How an Immigrant Family Achieved the American Dream (1991.)
