Glenda May Jackson (1936–2023) was a British actress and politician known for her intense portrayals of complex and strong-willed women.
Born in Birkenhead, England, Jackson began her career on the stage, earning acclaim for powerful performances in Shakespearean plays and contemporary dramas. Transitioning seamlessly to film, she won two Academy Awards for Best Actress for Women in Love (1970) and A Touch of Class (1973.)
Jackson also excelled on television, winning Emmy Awards for roles in Elizabeth R (1971) and Playing for Time (1980.) After retiring from acting in the early 1990s, she entered politics as a Labour Party Member of Parliament (1992–2015,) representing Hampstead and Highgate, serving as junior transport minister (1997–99.)
Post-politics, Jackson returned to the stage after a 25-year hiatus, earning acclaim for her 2016 West End performance in King Lear and a Tony Award in 2018 for Three Tall Women on Broadway. Notable later credits include the TV movie Elizabeth Is Missing (2019) and the romantic drama Mothering Sunday (2021.)
