Inspirational Quotes by Gerry Spence (American Lawyer)

Gerry Spence (1929–2025,) fully Gerald Leonard Spence, was an American trial lawyer, author, and legal commentator renowned for his advocacy of individual rights and courtroom victories. He was considered one of the most successful trial lawyers in U.S. history, having never lost a criminal jury trial.

Born in Laramie, Wyoming, Spence graduated first in his class from the University of Wyoming College of Law (1952.) Initially a defense attorney for insurance companies, he later shifted to representing individuals, famously stating he had “seen the light.”

Spence gained national attention for high-profile cases, including the Karen Silkwood case, Randy Weaver’s defense at Ruby Ridge, and lawsuits against major corporations. He founded the Trial Lawyers College to train attorneys in the pursuit of justice.

His notable books include How to Argue and Win Every Time (1995,) a guide to persuasive communication, Win Your Case (2005) on trial strategies, From Freedom to Slavery (1993,) a critique of the American justice system, and Police State: How America’s Cops Get Away with Murder (2015,) examining law enforcement practices.
