Inspirational Quotes by George Pope Morris (American Editor)

George Pope Morris (1802–64) was an American editor, poet, and songwriter known for his contributions to literary journalism and popular verse. He co-founded the New York Evening Mirror (1831) and helped publish Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven (1845.)

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Morris moved to New York City, where he launched the New-York Mirror (1823,) later merging it with Nathaniel Parker Willis’s American Monthly to form the Evening Mirror (1831.) He and Willis also founded the National Press (1846,) which became the Home Journal—now Town & Country.

Morris’s poetry gained popularity, particularly Woodman, Spare That Tree! (1837,) set to music by Henry Russell. His collections include The Deserted Bride and Other Poems (1838,) The Little Frenchman and His Water Lots (1839,) and Poems (1853.)

His influence extended to opera librettos, including Brier Cliff (1826) and The Maid of Saxony (1844.) His editorial work shaped American literary culture, fostering poetry, journalism, and music.
