Inspirational Quotes by George P. Upton (American Journalist)

George Putnam Upton (1834–1919) was an American journalist, music critic, and author known for his contributions to music literature and cultural journalism. He played a key role in shaping Chicago’s literary and musical scene.

Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Upton earned an M.A. from Brown University (1854) before moving to Chicago, where he became a music critic for the Chicago Tribune (1862.) He later served as senior editor (1881–1905,) influencing music journalism and public discourse.

Upton authored influential books, including The Standard Oratorios (1866,) Letters of Peregrine Pickle (1869,) Woman in Music (1880,) The Standard Operas (1885,) The Standard Cantatas (1887,) The Standard Symphonies (1888,) Musical Pastels (1902,) and Musical Memories (1908.) He also edited Theodore Thomas: A Musical Autobiography (1905.) His writings provided historical insights into classical music, making them essential references for musicians and scholars.
