Inspirational Quotes by George Colman the Younger (English Playwright)

George Colman, the Younger (1762–1836) was an English playwright renowned for his scathing satiric verse and successful management of theaters. His comedic operas, farces, melodramas, and sentimental comedies captivated audiences during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was the son of the English dramatist and essayist George Colman, the Elder.

Born in London, Colman was educated at Westminster School, Christ Church-Oxford, and King’s College-Aberdeen. Eventually, he began a legal career and became a student at Lincoln’s Inn in London. During his time in Aberdeen, he gained attention by publishing a satirical poem, ‘The Man of the People,’ which humorously targeted the Whig statesman Charles James Fox. In 1782, he achieved his first theatrical success with the production of The Female Dramatist at his father’s playhouse in the Haymarket.

Noted for sharp wit and satirical flair, Colman’s plays boldly critiqued societal norms. They lampooned prominent individuals and institutions of his time. His reputation soared with creating the enchanting romantic comedy Inkle and Yarico in 1787. Among his numerous dramatic works, The Iron Chest (1796) dramatizes William Godwin’s Caleb Williams. Meanwhile, his comedy portraying contemporary life, The Heir-at-Law (1797,) gained fame thanks to the memorable character of Dr. Pangloss, a greedy and pompous pedānt. Additionally, his play John Bull (1803) provided a satirical depiction of the supposed British character through the character of Job Thornberry.
