Fulton John Sheen (1895–1979,) born Peter John Sheen, was an American archbishop, author, and media personality known for his influential contributions to Catholicism and broadcasting.

Born in El Paso, Illinois, Sheen was ordained in 1919 and pursued advanced studies in theology and philosophy in Belgium before earning a doctorate from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.

Sheen’s career took a significant turn in 1930 when he launched his groundbreaking radio program, The Catholic Hour, which reached millions of listeners nationwide. His eloquent and accessible style made him a popular communicator of Catholic teachings, laying the foundation for his later ventures in television.

Transitioning to television in the 1950s, Sheen hosted the iconic program Life Is Worth Living. A blend of theology, philosophy, and humor, the show won an Emmy in 1952 and solidified Sheen’s status as a charismatic and beloved religious figure. His ability to bridge the gap between traditional Catholicism and contemporary audiences garnered widespread admiration.

Sheen’s influence extended beyond the media, as he was appointed as the Bishop of Rochester in 1966. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially acknowledged Sheen’s holy virtue, a significant advancement toward canonization, and in July 2019, Pope Francis endorsed a miracle associated with Sheen, paving the way for his potential beatification.

His acclaimed book, Peace of Soul (1949,) delved into spirituality and became a bestseller, reflecting his ability to connect with readers on a profound level. Other notable works include Communism and the Conscience of the West (1948,) Way to Inner Peace (1955,) and The Power of Love (1965.)
