Frederic Lawrence Knowles (1869–1905) was an American poet, editor, and literary critic known for his lyrical verse and anthologies. His works explored love, nature, and human experience, earning recognition in early 20th-century American poetry.
Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Knowles studied at Wesleyan University, where he edited Wesleyan Literary Monthly and was a Phi Beta Kappa member. He later attended Harvard University, graduating in 1896. After his studies, he worked as a manuscript reader for Houghton Mifflin & Co. and served as a literary adviser for L.C. Page & Company.
Knowles authored several poetry collections, including On Life’s Stairway (1900,) focused on personal growth, and Love Triumphant (1904,) celebrating romantic ideals. He also edited influential anthologies such as The Golden Treasury of American Lyrics (1897,) A Treasury of Humorous Poetry (1902,) and A Year-Book of Famous Lyrics (1903,) compiling notable poetic works.
