Frank Buchman (1878–1961,) fully Franklin Nathaniel Daniel Buchman, was an American Lutheran minister best known for founding the Oxford Group, which later became Moral Re-Armament (MRA.) His work on spiritual renewal, reconciliation, and personal transformation influenced global peace movements and leadership ethics.
Born in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, Buchman studied at Muhlenberg College and Mount Airy Lutheran Seminary, becoming a minister in 1902. His early social outreach was shaped by a personal crisis that led him to develop his philosophy of moral and spiritual change.
In 1921, he founded the First Century Christian Fellowship, renamed the Oxford Group in 1928, emphasizing honesty, confession, and moral living. By 1938, it became Moral Re-Armament, promoting international reconciliation and ethical leadership. His efforts contributed to Franco-German reconciliation after World War II, earning recognition from French and German governments.
Notable works include Remaking the World (1947,) outlining his vision for global moral renewal, and Frank Buchman: A Life (1985,) a biography by Garth Lean examining his influence on spiritual movements.
