François-Urbain Domergue (1745–1810) was a French grammarian, journalist, and educator known for his efforts to standardize the French language and his Jacobin ideals during the French Revolution.

Born in Aubagne, France, he studied at an oratory college in Marseille before teaching in Lyon. He married a surgeon’s daughter and published his first major work, Grammaire françoise simplifiée (1778, Simplified French Grammar,) clarifying grammar rules.

In 1784, he founded Journal de la Langue Françoise (1784, Journal of the French Language,) dedicated to preserving linguistic purity and combating neologisms. Moving to Paris, he established a society of amateur linguists and reissued Grammaire simplifiée.

Domergue contributed to Journal général du soir, de politique et de littérature and became a grammar professor at École centrale des Quatre-Nations. In 1803, he was elected to Seat 1 of the Académie Française, helping commission its dictionary.
