François Gautier (b.1950) is a French journalist, historian, and author known for his writings on Indian history, politics, and culture. He has served as the South Asian correspondent for Le Figaro and Journal de Genève.
Born in Paris, Gautier received a Catholic education and attended IDRAC business school before leaving to pursue journalism. In 1969, he traveled to India, settling in Auroville, where Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy deeply influenced him. His experiences shaped his nationalist perspective on Indian history. Beyond writing, Gautier founded the Foundation for Advancement of Cultural Ties (FACT) and established a Pune museum dedicated to Indian history. His columns have appeared in The New Indian Express, DNA India, and Outlook India.
His books include The Wonder That Is India (2001,) A New History of India (2008,) The Art of Healing (2011,) In Defense of a Billion Hindus (2018,) and Hindu Power in the 21st Century (2019,) exploring Indian civilization, Hinduism, and political narratives. His French works include Quand l’Inde s’éveille, la France est endormie (2013) and Nouvelle Histoire de l’Inde (2017.)
