Frances Hesselbein (1915–2022,) née Fox, was an American businessperson and leadership expert. She left an enduring legacy for her transformative leadership at the Girl Scouts of the USA and her notable contributions to the management field.
Born in New York City, Hesselbein embarked on her career in the fashion industry. She transitioned to the Girl Scouts and progressively moved up the ranks to become CEO in 1976. Hesselbein’s tenure at the helm of the Girl Scouts was characterized by innovation, inclusivity, and a strong emphasis on leadership development. Under her guidance, the organization thrived, adapting to the evolving needs of young women and embracing diversity.
In the 1990s, Hesselbein took on the role of CEO at the Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, established by management guru Peter Drucker. There, she further solidified her reputation as a leadership expert and speaker, championing ethical leadership, collaboration, and continuous learning.
Hesselbein’s influence extended as a leadership expert, with her authorship, co-authorship, or co-editing of 27 books published in 29 languages. Notable among them are Hesselbein on Leadership (2002,) Be, Know, Do: Leadership the Army Way (2004,) and My Life in Leadership (2011.)
