Ernst Gombrich (1909–2001,) fully Sir Ernst Hans Josef Gombrich, was an Austrian-born British art historian known for his work on visual perception, cultural history, and artistic interpretation. His book The Story of Art (1950) made art history accessible to a broad audience.

Born in Vienna, he studied art history, archaeology, psychology, and philosophy at the University of Vienna. In 1936, he moved to London to work at the Warburg Institute, later becoming its director (1959.) During World War II, he contributed to British intelligence by analyzing German radio broadcasts.

Gombrich’s scholarship explored perception and artistic style evolution. His influential Art and Illusion (1960) examined how viewers interpret images, shaping modern art theory. Other works include Meditations on a Hobby Horse (1963,) The Sense of Order (1979,) and The Image and the Eye (1981,) each analyzing aspects of artistic representation.

His first book, A Little History of the World (1936,) was initially banned by the Nazis but later became a widely read introduction to world history.
