Emily S. Bouton (1837–1927,) born Emily St. John Bouton, was an American educator, journalist, author, and editor who championed women’s education and social reform. A prominent writer for Toledo Blade, she contributed editorials, literary criticism, and household advice columns.
Born in New Canaan, Connecticut, Bouton was educated in Binghamton, New York, and graduated valedictorian from Sandusky High School (1857.) She began teaching at 14, later holding high-ranking positions in Toledo and Chicago schools before transitioning to journalism.
A leading voice on women’s issues, she wrote extensively on health, beauty, etiquette, and domestic life. Notable works include Health and Beauty (1892,) offering hygiene and self-care guidance, and Social Etiquette (1891,) examining manners and societal expectations. She also contributed to pamphlets and periodicals, shaping discourse on women’s roles.
As an editor, she managed columns like “Household,” “Saturday Salad,” and “Home Talk,” influencing domestic and social culture. Her work advanced progressive ideals, advocating for women’s education and careers.
