Inspirational Quotes by Elizabeth Winthrop (American Writer)

Elizabeth Winthrop (b.1948,) née Alsop, is an American author known for children’s literature, historical fiction, and memoirs.

Born in Washington, D.C., she is the daughter of journalist Stewart Alsop and a descendant of Theodore Roosevelt. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College and published over 60 books across various genres.

Winthrop is best known for The Castle in the Attic (1985) and its sequel, The Battle for the Castle (1993,) both nominated for 23 state book awards and considered children’s classics. Her historical novel Counting on Grace (2006) was a Notable Book of the Year by the American Library Association and received multiple award nominations.

Her memoir, Daughter of Spies: Wartime Secrets, Family Lies (2022,) explores her parents’ World War II love story and 1950s Washington politics. Other notable works include Island Justice (2012,) In My Mother’s House (recently released as an e-book,) and popular picture books Dumpy La Rue, Shoes, and Squashed in the Middle.
