Elizabeth Dole (b.1936,) originally Mary Elizabeth Alexander Hanford, is an American attorney, author, and politician known for her trailblazing government and public service career. She served as U.S. Senator from North Carolina (2003–09) and held cabinet positions under two presidents, becoming one of America’s most influential women in politics.
Born in Salisbury, North Carolina, Dole graduated from Duke University (1958) and earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1965.) She began in government under the Johnson administration before transitioning to Republican politics in 1975.
Dole served as Secretary of Transportation (1983–87) under Ronald Reagan, becoming the first woman to lead a U.S. military branch through Coast Guard oversight. She later became Secretary of Labor (1989–90) under George H.W. Bush, focusing on workplace safety and labor rights.
