Edwin Diller Starbuck (1866–1947,) born Edwin Eli Starbuck, was an American psychologist and educator known for pioneering research in the psychology of religion and moral education. His work shaped early studies on religious experience, conversion, and character development.
Born in Guilford Township, Indiana, Starbuck was raised in a Quaker family, influencing his interest in spiritual and ethical development. He earned a B.A. in philosophy from Indiana University (1890) and later studied at Harvard, researching religious conversion under William James. He received an M.A. (1895) and completed a PhD at Clark University (1897) under G. Stanley Hall, focusing on religious psychology.
Starbuck’s notable publications include The Psychology of Religion (1899,) the first major work in the field, and Moral Training in the Public Schools (1907,) exploring character education. He contributed to William James‘The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902,) shaping its theoretical framework.
He held academic positions at Stanford University, Earlham College, the University of Iowa, and the University of Southern California, continuing research on child development, moral education, and religious psychology.
