Edward Porter Humphrey (1809–86) was an American Presbyterian minister, orator, and writer known for his theological contributions and leadership in the Presbyterian Church. He played a key role in religious education and church governance, serving as Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly.
Born in Fairfield, Connecticut, Humphrey was the son of Heman Humphrey, a Congregationalist minister and president of Amherst College. He graduated from Amherst College (1828) and later studied at Andover Theological Seminary, training for pastoral ministry.
Humphrey began as a minister in Jeffersonville, Indiana (1834) before moving to Louisville, Kentucky, where he pastored Second Presbyterian Church for 18 years. In 1852, he was elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the Old School Presbyterian Church, delivering influential sermons on theology and faith.
His notable publications include Our Theology in Its Developments (1857,) exploring Presbyterian doctrine; The Nature of Saving Faith (1851,) examining Christian belief; and Sacred History From the Creation to the Giving of the Law (1888,) providing a historical perspective on biblical events. Other works include The Promised Land (1870) and The Color Question: A Letter (1877,) reflecting his views on theology and social issues.
