Inspirational Quotes by Edward Eggleston (American Historian)

Edward Eggleston (1837–1902) was an American historian, novelist, and clergyman known for his realistic portrayals of frontier life and contributions to social history. He edited Little Oral, National Sunday School Teacher, and Hearth and Home.

Born in Vevay, Indiana, Eggleston was often too ill for school and was largely educated by his father. He became a Methodist minister in 1856 but later shifted to writing and historical research.

He gained recognition with The Hoosier Schoolmaster (1871,) depicting rural Indiana life, followed by The End of the World (1872,) which examined religious fervor surrounding the predicted Second Coming of Christ in 1843. Other novels include The Mystery of Metropolisville (1873,) The Circuit Rider (1874,) Roxy (1878,) and The Graysons (1888,) many featuring regional dialects.

After traveling to Europe in 1879, Eggleston focused on history, advocating social narratives over battle accounts. His major works include Beginners of a Nation (1896) and The Transit of Civilization from England to America (1900,) analyzing early America’s cultural transitions.

A founding member of the American Historical Association, he served as its president in 1899. His childhood home in Vevay, Indiana, is on the National Register of Historic Places, while his summer home, Owl’s Nest, in Lake George, New York, was designated a National Historic Landmark.
