Ed Koch (1924–2013,) fully Edward Irving Koch, was an American politician, lawyer, and author best known as New York City’s 105th mayor (1978–89.) His tenure was marked by fiscal recovery, infrastructure improvements, and a tough, outspoken leadership style.

Born in the Bronx, New York, Koch studied at City College of New York before earning his law degree from New York University. He began in politics as a New York City Council member (1967–69,) later serving in the U.S. House of Representatives (1969–77) before becoming mayor. He championed public housing renewal and engaged New Yorkers with his signature phrase, “How’m I doin’?”

Koch authored several books, including Mayor (1984,) Politics (1986,) Citizen Koch: An Autobiography (1992,) and Ed Koch on Everything (1994.) He also co-wrote mystery novels such as Murder at City Hall (1995,) Murder on Broadway (1996,) and Murder on 34th Street (1997.)

A lifelong Democrat, Koch often crossed party lines, endorsing Republican candidates like Rudy Giuliani and George W. Bush.
