Inspirational Quotes by E. Merrill Root (American Educator, Poet)

Edward Merrill Root (1895–1973) was an American educator, poet, and conservative thinker. Root left a lasting mark on conservative intellectual thought.

Born in Baltimore, he pursued studies at Amherst College, Andover Theological Seminary, the University of Missouri, and Harvard. He spent four decades as an English literature professor at Earlham College, influencing academic discourse on culture and society.

A founding writer for William F. Buckley, Jr.’s National Review, Root later became an editor for American Opinion, the John Birch Society’s magazine, championing conservative ideals and strongly opposing communism. His works defended traditional American values, including poetry collections Lost Eden (1926) and Bravo for Life (1934,) and prose works Collectivism on the Campus (1955) and Brainwashing in the High Schools (1958.)
