Inspirational Quotes by Dorothy Richardson (British Author, Journalist)

Dorothy Miller Richardson (1873–1957) was an English novelist and journalist who pioneered stream-of-consciousness fiction, emphasizing female consciousness and introspection. Though overshadowed by Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, she remains a key figure in modernist literature.

Born in Abingdon, England, she spent her early years in Victorian-era seclusion before moving to London, where she worked as a governess, teacher, and dental assistant.

Richardson’s literary career began with Pointed Roofs (1915,) the first volume of her Pilgrimage series, a sequence of 13 semi-autobiographical novels. She followed with Backwater (1916,) Honeycomb (1917,) The Tunnel (1919,) and Interim (1919,) refining her experimental style. Later volumes included Deadlock (1921,) Revolving Lights (1923,) The Trap (1925,) Oberland (1927,) Dawn’s Left Hand (1931,) Clear Horizon (1935,) Dimple Hill (1938,) and March Moonlight (1967.) She viewed them as chapters of a single novel rather than separate books.

Beyond fiction, Richardson wrote The Quakers Past and Present (1914) and edited Gleanings from the Works of George Fox (1914,) reflecting her interest in Quakerism.
