Inspirational Quotes by Donald Rumsfeld (American Government Official)

Donald Henry Rumsfeld (1932–2021) was an American politician, government official, and businessman who served twice as secretary of defense under Republican presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush. He was involved in America’s bitterly divisive wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that cost thousands of lives and trillions of dollars.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Rumsfeld served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1963–69 as an Illinois Republican before joining the Nixon Administration as an economic adviser 1969–72. Under President Ford, he became the youngest U.S. secretary of defense (1975–77,) a post he held again (2001–06) under President George W. Bush.

Rumsfeld’s name will perpetually be associated with the 2003 invasion of Iraq on the trail of non-existent weapons of mass destruction and the widespread use of prisoner abuse and torture. His unwillingness to heed warnings that did not conform with his worldviews alienated the military.

Rumsfeld’s autobiography, Known and Unknown: A Memoir (2011,) attempted to revamp his legacy. Yet, he accepted almost no blame for the debacle in Iraq and contended that the Middle East would be “far more perilous than it is today” had Saddam Hussian remained in power.
