Don Nickles (b.1948,) born Donald Lee Nickles, is an American politician and lobbyist best known for serving as a Republican U.S. Senator from Oklahoma (1981–2005.) A fiscal and social conservative, he advocated tax cuts, reduced government spending, and national defense policies.
Born in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Nickles earned a B.A. in business administration from Oklahoma State University (1971.) He worked in his family’s manufacturing business before entering politics. In 1978, he was elected to the Oklahoma State Senate, serving until 1981, when he became the youngest Republican ever elected to the U.S. Senate at 31.
During his Senate career, Nickles held key leadership positions, including Senate Majority Whip (1996–2001) and Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee (2003–05.) He influenced tax policy, labor laws, and military funding. After retiring, he founded The Nickles Group, a lobbying firm specializing in business and government relations.
